The day 1st February is celebrated as Indian Coast Guard Day. The Indian Coast Guard is an armed force whose job is to search, rescue and secure the Indian Coasts and enforce the regulations within the maritime Zones of India. Indian Coast Guard, the 4th Largest Coast Guard in the World, saves one precious life every second day at sea. They work with the cooperation of Indian Navy, the Department of Fisheries, the Department of Revenue (Customs) and the Central and State Police Force.
Motto of Indian Coast Guard is – ‘Vayam Raksamah’ or ‘We Protect’.
On 18th
August 1978 Indian Coast Guard was established by
the Coast Guard Act 1978 when Morarji Desai was
the Prime minister of India. But we Celebrate Indian Coast
guard day on 1st February.
You Know why? Because on 1st
February 1977 an interim Indian Coast Guard came
and equipped with two small corvettes and five petrol boats transferred from
Indian Navy. Vice Admiral V. A. Kamath
of the Indian Navy was appointed as the founding Director General of Indian
Coast Guard.
